I keep my seven horses at home with me.  I used to board in Kansas on a military base and it was nice, but I only had one horse at that time.  When I moved home, I had two and we live on a farm. It was nice on the base, because I always had someone to ride with or do horse events with. Here at home, there are not a lot of people interested in horses the way I am.   It's hard work, taking care of horses on your own.  Each of mine is in their own pen or they have individual run ins with a small pasture.  Each needs to be cared for every day twice a day.  They need cleaning and feeding and play time just the same as a stable, except it's me doing all the work.  I love every min. of caring for them.  If I didn't I wouldn't have them.  But when it gets cold and is below zero and water is freezing and yup' guess what you have to be the one out there feeding and watering, because no one else will do it.  I'd love to board to be able to ride in the winter, I do not have an indoor, so I have to put training and riding on hold most of the time due to ice and snow and the time it takes in the barn to get everything done, is a lot longer.  There is a lot of work that goes into it at all times of the year.  I can't just show up and ride and go home.  Would be nice, but there is hay to make and put up, horses to be fed and cleaned and put out.  Then there is fence to make and fields to clean for pastures, horses to train and work and then maybe I'll get time out to ride. Smiley
It's fun and hard work, but I wouldn't trade any of the horses I got to be able to board and only have one, since each has their own personality, and everyday is a new adventure with them.

Sounds like you could be the type to fully appreciate the work involved at a boarding stable and taking care of many horses.

It takes a special person to take on the responsibilities of not only owning a horse, but taking care of it too.  There is much to be done and it is 365 days a year.  There are no days off.

This is the reason why boarding at a stable can be somewhat pricey.  But if you really look at what your board goes to, the service of having someone else do all the work for you is actually cheap.

Here is a normal run down of costs that is paid by your board:

  • feed - grain & hay (and it is not cheaper to grow your own hay when you add in the cost of the land, equipment and labor needed to grow and harvest it!)
  • bedding
  • electricity
  • upkeep and housecleaning
  • property and liability insurance
  • labor for turnout, stalls, etc. (either you do the work or you have to hire it out and it is every day of the year...yes, holidays too!)
  • advertising in newspapers, phone book, internet, etc.
  • equipment (shovels, brooms, pickers, buckets, feeders, stall hooks, light bulbs, etc.)
  • motorized equipment (dump truck, 4 wheelers, tractor, etc.)
  • fuel for the trucks, tractor, etc.
  • maintenance and repairs (and horses can damage property pretty quickly!)
  • and don't forget the mortgage payment on the barn itself!

It is understandable, though, the many personal rewards and satisfaction when taking care of your own horses!   (And I bet your horses are well taken care of!)

Good for you!! Grin
